Design Catalogues - Application

Design catalogs are a collection of proven solutions for various design tasks. They are meant to give impulses for solutions or be transferred by systematically matching features and task requirements.

Design catalogs help with applying technical standard solutions to the development of new products by allowing quick and easy access to a wide range of solutions in a task-oriented way. The selection of a suitable solution is made easier by the number of features stored in the selection characteristics.

One distinguishes between

  • solutions catalog (eg. physical effects)
  • object catalog (eg. machine parts, standard components)
  • procedures catalog (eg. procedural steps, procedures)

depending on the intended use.

  1. Finding a catalog: search for a catalog corresponding to the task.
  2. Possible sources: internet or expert literature: Roth, K.: Konstruieren mit Konstruktionskatalogen. Band I & II. 3. Auflage. Springer-Verlag, 2000 or internal collections or catalogs
  3. Finding solutions: the solutions in the catalog can be easily transferred to the task because of the selection characteristics. Comparing the task with selection characteristics for various solutions can help narrow the solution area.
  4. Examination and evaluation of solution: Because of the classifying criteria as well as the additional illustrations and information in the main part, it is possible to ensure the technical implementation and transferability for the respective task. After that, a suitable solution can be selected.
  5. Transfer to task: adaptations of the selected solution may be necessary to fit the task.
